Hillarious

Not just 5 minutes ago I was listening to those dope Cubs TV announcers, and they were all like
"Carlos Zambrano is unhittable tonight. With this kindof a shift I don't see why Ken Griffey Jr. doesn't just bunt for a single."
Maybe because Griffey has more than 500 home runs in his career and Zambrano is a 3-2 pitcher, ya think? By the middle of his sentence the ball was on Waveland avenue. I think the 1 - 0 lead will hold up. I might be wrong, but probably not.

P.S. I just emailed Hawk and DJ about whether anybody has ever been stupid enough to try that. Tune in all week to see if they answer my question.

Pretenders

The Detroit Tigers are 1 - 7 against American League teams with above .500 records.

by the way, the White Sox are 6 - 3

Class Ranking Outdated?

Check out the Tribune Class rankings outdated? Naperville schools say yes. Check out this amazing fact:
But at intensely competitive Naperville Central High School, Johnston's 3.9 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale ranks somewhere around 140th in a class of 800.
Since late undergraduate I have always been a fan of pass/fail (w/ optional honors). Someday I will open a college and do things right.

All city team revisited

I admit Juan Uribe is having a tough year, so I did not question the seletion of Rony Cedano as the all-city shortstop. But yesterday, for some odd reason, I caught the end of the Cubs game and Cedeno came up with 2 outs in the ninth cubs down 2-1 with a runner in scoring psition. At that moment I thought to myself "I would rather have Uribe up in this position." Just then Cedano hit a pedestrian pop-up to the third baseman. Game over.

As chance would have it, Juan Uribe did come up to bat that very same day in the ninth inning with the sox down 2-1. Result: RBI single. Maybe next year, Cedano. One more stat I caught during the Cubs game: Juan Pierre is 0-24 with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. I thought: I could do THAT.

10,000 hits

Recently this blog climbed past this cyber milestone. I would like to thank the 6 people who read this blog and persistent international robots scouring the web for email addresses. To them I have to say up_yours_robots@hotmail.com in case you were wondering (I'm sure you weren't) the 10,000 visitor is from California. I am calling NSA to get phone records this weekend.

I saw lightening

I have a very nice view of downtown in my bedroom (including the Sears tower), and last night when I was lying in bed I am pretty sure I saw lightening strike one of the grounding poles on the Sear's tower. I wish I had been paying closer attention at that particular moment.

If you are an American Idol fan

you should get Cingular wireless. Since the phones are busy all night, the "phone vote" is going to be the same for each contestant. However, text message votes are not restricted and you can tip the scales. Katherine is hot and Taylor is charming so tonight is a win-win. Prediction: Katherine lost.

Phil Rogers's All-City team

here it is
  • 3b: Joe Crede

  • SS: Ronny Cedano

  • 2b: Tadahito Iguchi

  • 1b: Paul Konerko

  • Lf: Scott Podsednik

  • Cf: Aaron Rowand (?)

  • Rf: Jermaine Dye

  • C: A.J. Pierzinski

  • P1: Jose Contreras

  • P2: Greg Maddox

  • P3: Mark Buehrle

  • P4: Javier Vasquez

  • P5: Carlos Zambrano

  • Set-up(L): Scott Eyre

  • Set-up(R): Bobby Howry

  • Closer: Ryan Dempster

  • Manager: Ozzie Guillen

  • X-factor: Jim Thome

  • long story short: Cubs have a better bullpen and the Sox have a better everything-else. Too bad Derrik Lee got hurt, then there would have been a real debate on this list reminiscent of the Ordonez/Sosa debate. Also, I take Brian Anderson over Juan Pierre.

    Red Line Series, Take 1

It's Cubs-Sox time again, Chicago! It hardly feels worth it anymore since the good guys won it all. *yawn*.

    Hazing

    Nice insight
Funny how Colorado's football program survived multiple rape allegations and the employment of recruiting prostitutes without missing one regular-season contest, but two escorts with little credibility and a shaky story shut down the country's No. 2 lacrosse team and photos of college women drinking beer and kissing in their underwear halted a soccer squad.
    my opinion: hazing ok.

    hahahha

Over the weekend, the BBC accidentally mistook a cab driver for tech savvy IT Expert Guy Kewney. The cabbie was waiting in the lobby for a fare when he was swooshed on set, micd up and before he knew it answering questions about the Apple Vs Apple Legal battle. Watch as he gives a face of shock then does his best to go along with it all, hilarious!

    Durbin Tips His Hand

Dick Durbin in his response to Bush's speech
The President has the power to call up the National Guard to patrol the border; but does he have the power to lead his own Republican forces in Congress in support of real immigration reform?
Prediction: votes will be blocked and nothing will get done. There will be a massive PR campaign to blame Bush for this, and that will leave many scratching their heads. After all, how is it Bush's fault that the Senate wont vote?

Normally, I Would Say Support the President

but he is planning a speech tonight and I can't help wondering if I am going to miss some heart wrenching action of 24. I mean, immigration is important and all, but Jack Bauer is on the verge of uncorking one of the greatest scandals in US history. Please Mr. President, make your speech short.

    No More Speeding Tickets

If I speed, my commute is shorter. If my commute is shorter, then I spend more time at work. This is good for the economy. I no longer obey speeding laws.

Knuckleball: Pitch of the Common Man

I think the reason everyone loves the knuckleball is because there is a voice in the back of your mind saying "I could do that." You can close your eyes and for a moment really believe you could pitch in the big leagues. Charle Haeger came up from triple-A to start in the place of Jose Contreras who has lower back stiffness. He was less than marvelous, giving up 5 runs in 4.1 innings. Then when I looked at the radar, I see he is throwing his knuckle ball in the low 70s. That's my fastball.

    Conan in Chicago

It was with a heavy heart yesterday that I watched the first episode of Conan aired in Chicago. I emailed about tickets, but I'm afraid I was too late. The show was pretty good, but Conan obviously had trouble managing a much larger corwd than he is used to (about 3800 in Chicago Theater). Oh well, and his bit with Mr. T was cool for its Chicago nostalgia (he toured the city, the best part was they didn't go north of Madison), but was a little short on comedy. They did play the Go-go White Sox theme song...cool.

One thing that made me wince a little was the borderline pathetic 5 minute cheering sessions after every Chicago reference. I can forgive the excitement, since it was the first episode. I'll be tuning in all week and will let you know if there is anything worth mentioning.

For Conan fans who can't get enough, you can access videos of Conan in Chicago plus exclusive interviews at www.nbc5.com/conan.

    Guess what I just ate

Some people decried the relocation of Maxwell street. To pay homage, one of the new cafes has a "Maxwell Street Omlette"

  • Eggs

  • Polish Sausage

  • Pork Chops

  • Grilled onions

  • Chedder cheese

  • (optional)French Fries

  • sooo awesome
