Gay Kids

I found this really bizzare post at a thoroughly mainstream blob The Daily Dish
The Marriage Rate Among Gays...So far, it's around 17 percent in Massachusetts, which may be distorted upward because of pent-up demand. Only time will give us more solid data. My own view is that we will only be able to guage the true rate once an entire generation of gay kids has grown up in the knowledge that one day, they too can get married like their parents. Only then will the psychological wounds inflicted on gay youth's self-esteem be healed enough to compare them with their heterosexual peers.

huh? Gay parents don't raise gay kids. Not only that, what is a gay kid anyway? We talking teenagers? On second reading, I guess he meant gay kids with straight parents.

I totally bought into this

The NL Central is weak, right? Nope. The NL central is (as of today) 17 games over .500 as a division. Whoa!

Yesterday

I watched the Cubs briefly while I waited for 24 and noticed that Jacque Jones was getting booed after his at-bat. He is kindof pissed.

Cafe Scientifique

The first meeting in Chicago is tommorow, I think. Check out the webpage. I started out sounding kinda flaky, but I have heard Sean Carroll speak before and he is really very good.

If you watch 24

Riddle me this: if you had a recording of evidence that implicated someone else in a crime, why wouldn't you play the recording into your voicemail?

Tall Tale

You ever read those insurance claims that are too good to be true? You know, like, "I was walking down the street and a bird flew into me and I fell on my car which was in neutral..." Here's a good one about a girl being cited for underage drinking.
After consuming the equivalent of three alcoholic drinks she tried to jump on a friend's back but fell on pavement inside of the Quadrangle, suffering a cut above her right eye.

[A]fter her friends informed house officials that she needed medical attention, a police officer entered her Ware College House room and asked for her PennCard.

She said the officer then asked if she had been drinking. After the officer assured [her] that she would not face punishment, [the student] said she admitted to consuming alcohol.

"I just assumed she was a medical official," she said. "I thought, 'Maybe they need to know for medical reasons.'"

[the student] said the officer's badge was not visible and that the officer failed to identify herself.

Following her admission of drinking, [the student] said the officer informed her that underage drinking is illegal and began to ask questions in what she described as a "very accusatory" manner.

Believing that she was about to be cited for drinking in spite of her injury and although she cooperated, [the student] said, she then grabbed her PennCard from the officer's hand and ran out of the room, where she said about 10 security and police officials were standing.

[the student] said that one of the officers grabbed her and she began to yell and attempt to break free.

An officer then handcuffed her, she said, and she was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and treated for the injury. She was released later that morning.

An idea

The White Sox are holding a raffle to win an authetic championship ring.

enter for your chance to win

I had an idea for a raffle of my own. I love baseball, and if they raffled off a chance to be a DH in a minor league game I think the lines would bust the block.

Breaking in: Christians intolerant

Headline: Christians Sue for Right Not to Tolerate.

ATLANTA — Ruth Malhotra went to court last month for the right to be intolerant.

Malhotra says her Christian faith compels her to speak out against homosexuality. But the Georgia Institute of Technology ... bans speech that puts down others because of their sexual orientation.

Malhotra sees that as an unacceptable infringement on her right to religious expression...With her lawsuit, the 22-year-old student joins a growing campaign to force public schools, state colleges and private workplaces to eliminate policies protecting gays and lesbians from harassment. The religious right aims to overturn a broad range of common tolerance programs [etc. -ed.]

Baseball is here

And everyone who knows me knows I am remarkable precient when it comes to predicting baseball outcomes. This season: The White Sox will win the world series. Not only that, they will rewrite the defintion of dominance by winning 137 games during the regular season. The Cubs will finish 3rd, but there is a silver lining: reasoning that no National League team deserves to be on the field with the White Sox, they select the Cubs to represent the NL in the world series. The reasoning is as follows: there is history and that might give the Cubbies the emotional energy to compete. Before the series they agree (for ratings purposes) to play all seven games no matter the outcome. The White Sox sweep; amazingly though they only out score the cubs 106-4.

Obama Joins Global Warming Enthusiasts

It's a win-win.
Obama said the government should provide tax breaks and loan guarantees to show the way toward greater use of environmentally friendlier energy sources.

He cited several pieces of legislation he has introduced in Congress...[The legislation] calls for the federal government to pick up a portion of the costs automakers pay for retiree health care, so long as companies use some of the savings to retool their factories.

Obama said the Big Three domestic automakers spent $6.7 billion on retiree health care costs in 2004.

"It's a win-win proposal for the industry -- their retirees will be taken care of, they'll save money on health care and they'll be free to invest in the kind of fuel-efficient cars that are the key to their competitive future," he said of the legislation.

"As gas prices keep rising, the Middle East grows ever more unstable and the ice caps continue to melt, we face a now-or-never, once-in-a-generation opportunity to set this country on a different course," Obama said.
Oh dear. Why is it that the end of the world is so sexy? Years from now you'll say you were there, and don't forget to buy your hybrids: it's a now-or-never to save the planet (for real, this time).

UPDATE: Gore is on his own media blitz as well
[Gore wrote] a gasket-blowing polemic arguing that by refusing to face up to the threat of global warming, Bush is just like the disgraced British prime minister who appeased the Nazis before World War II.

"Where there is no vision, the people perish," Gore writes, quoting the Bible to bash Bush.

Warning that Bush and the Republican Congress have displayed "a blinding lack of awareness" about "the worst catastrophe in the history of human civilization"

Overheard in a coffe shop

I like to work/read in the coffee shop across the street. Today, as I was sitting at the counter reading a grizzled late twenty-something sat next to me. I would describe him as in a flannel shirt, beard, and smelled like he just smoked awhole pack of unfiltered cigarettes. He got started talking to our waitress (who I would guess is in high school).

He mentioned he might go see a movie with friends tonight and I almost fell out of my chair laughing when she said "I really recommend She's the Man".
